Scottish Peace Network: Autumn Events 2018

At our last couple of meetings we brainstormed a series of events that would look back to the four years SPN has been commemorating the First World War from an anti-militarist, non-jingoistic point of view– and look forward to the weeks and months ahead. The theme Another World Is Possible would be at the heart of all the events. We came up with the following:

On Saturday, 3 November from 1 to 3pm the Peace Network will hold a white poppy stall at Dewar’s statue on Buchanan Street in Glasgow city centre.

On Sunday, 4 November, the SNP branch of CND is sponsoring a conference to look at an independent Scotland’s relation to NATO and developing its own policy toward the military. The conference will take place in Stirling at Albert Halls from 10:30 to 4:00 and costs from £3-5.

On Monday, 5 November, 12 noon, at the Mitchell Library, there will be a presentation on conscientious objectors during both world wars, and documents from the Spirit of Revolt archives.

On Tuesday, 6 November, at 7pm, Dove Tales is sponsoring a poetry and music event celebrating the conscientious objectors who refused to fight during World War I and II. The event will take place at the CCA.

On Saturday, 10 November, at 4:30 pm, we will assemble at the cenotaph in George Square for the laying of a white poppy wreath. This to follow the SCND AGM.

On Sunday, 11 November, Remembrance Day, at 3 pm there will be a peace memorial at Barshaw Park in Paisley. Sponsored by the East Renfrewshire Interfaith council.

On Saturday, 17 November, at 7pm, Dove Tales is sponsoring a concert at St. Giles Cathedral. With spoken word and music, the concert will explore World War I as The War to End All Wars?
